ERYTHRONIUM (Dog’s tooth violet)

These are attractive spring flowering bulbs for humus rich soil in part or light shade. They prefer a humus rich soil with plenty of moisture available when in leaf. They have a small spike of turks cap flowers of intense colour above marbled leaves. They come from the mountains of europe or N America where they are called glacier lily or trout lily. The plants vary in size from a dwarf 4" to medium sized 10". Flowers in March and April. Their common name Dog’s Tooth Violet refers to their pointed bulbs. They are planted as dormant tubers in the autumn, 6" deep and 4" apart. The bulbs must not be allowed to dry out before planting. They are summer dormant.

They tend to seed rather than clump and can form extensive colonies when happy. They require an acid soil in light shade. They must not be too dry. Summer dormant. Like all this group the bulbs must not be allowed to dry out before planting. We will lift the bulbs just before we post them.
