CAMASSIA (quamash)

CAMASSIA (quamash)

CAMASSIA (quamash)

Camassia is a genus of six species native to North America. These attractive early summer flowering bulbs are ideal for any sunny border or they can be naturalised in grass. They are especially attractive under fruit trees when combined with purple tulips. The stary flowers are arranged in a stiff spike and vary in heigh from 30cm to 1.2m. The flowers have dramatic yellow stamens. They are useful to add height to a border. They flower in late May and June. Some plants have variegated foliage that contrasts well with the typically blue flowers. Camassia quamash (C.esculenta) was eaten by the native Americans. Plants are perennial, bulbs should be sown in the autumn and they can be divided once the foliage has withered.

CAMASSIA LEICHTLINII SEMI-PLENA

This is the tallest of the camassias and the last to flower. The very tall, stiff stems, are  densely covered with a succession of creamy-yellow star-shaped flowers that are semi-double. The flower for a long time and are perfect for the middle of a sunny border.Like all summer flowering bulbs the leaves are fading by the time the flowers appear so I plant them in the middle of the border. They are good poking up behind the leaves of daylilies (hemerocallis)
