ALLIUM (ORNAMENTAL ONION)

ALLIUM (ORNAMENTAL ONION)

The dramatic drumstick ornamental onions are perfect for a sunny border in early summer . These popular early summer flowering bulbs vary in height from 4" to 4’ and thier heads of stary flowers are 4" to 12" in diameter. The largest heads are on the shortest stems so that they do not blow over in their native locations which a dry rocky hillsides in the Middle east and central Asia.

All require a dry, sunny soil. Flowering is from early May to late June. Colours vary from white through to dark mauve while some of the smaller ones are golden yellow. Dramatic planting effects can be achieved by planting the bulbs through grasses. The dwarf Allium karataviense and Allium moly make good front of border plants. The seed heads of the drumstick types dry well. The bulbs are planted in the early autumn 4" deep and 2 - 6 " apart depending upon the size of the flower head. Chose a well drained soil as they do not like to be waterlogged.

The RHS is having a Trial of tall alliums at Wisley. Why not visit them and see over 100 cultivars.Award of Garden Merit
